LEADING BURGER CHAIN LAUNCHES NEW MENU
Burger Planet announces healthier alternatives with lower calories
GARY, Ind. - The leader in the quick service restaurant industry, Burger Planet, will be offering new low calorie items including fruit packages, white-meat chicken breast, and a variety of gourmet salads. The restaurant will still offer the same favorites as well.
“Burger Planet cares about its customers,” said James E. Muellenbach III, CEO of Burger Planet. “For more than seven decades, Burger Planet has succeeded because it puts customers first. We listen to our customers and our customers desire healthy choices, of which we offer many.”
Salads included on the new menu are: a raspberry vinaigrette spinach salad with gorgonzola cheese and walnuts, a spinach salad with hot bacon dressing and eggs, and a Caesar salad. The low-carb gourmet salads each weigh in at 300 calories apiece and only 150 calories apiece without dressing. Each can be purchased for $4.99.
Fruit packages are another addition and can be substituted for french fries in Burger Planet combo meals at no additional cost. Customers can pick from bananas, pineapple chunks, grapes, apples or peaches that come in resealable plastic sandwich bags. Each package has 150 calories and can be purchased for $3.99 each.
In addition to the salads and fruit, a new white-meat chicken breast is now available. The breasts can be purchased with a bun or for those on a low-carb diet it can be wrapped in lettuce. Even with a bun, the breast has only 300 calories. Ordering the chicken without mayonnaise will cut 150 calories. The cost will be $3.99 for the chicken breast.
In conjunction with the new menu, Burger Planet is teaming up with fitness guru-to-the-stars, Jayne Petersen. She is famed for helping talk show host, Opal Whitcomb, lose 75 pounds and keep it off. Like Burger Planet, Petersen preaches moderation.
“Women ca n have a burger and fries now and then as long as they are active and also try some of Burger Planet’s exciting new menu choices, such as the fruit packages,” said Petersen, president and CEO of Looking Glass, Inc.
Petersen will be joining Burger Planet’s own Corny the Clown on a promotional tour across the country. The events will kick off at the Burger Planet at Times Square in New York on May 12. In the month of June, Petersen and Corny will be appearing at 12 Burger Planets in different cities, providing nutritional packet s and advice to consumers. Starting in July they will be appearing in seven malls across America providing the same information. The first stop will be at the Mall of America in Minnesota.
The fitness guru will also be working with Burger Planet chefs to help ensure the new menu is as healthy as possible. She is currently working on the development of a new adult Burger Smiley Meal that will include an ankle weight, fruit packages and white-meat chicken breast. This is in addition to new tray liners offering nutritional advice.
Founded in 1934 by James E. Muellenbach I and headquartered in Gary, Ind., Burger Planet has served over 52 billion customers and counting. At last count Burger Planet has 8,921 franchises across the world and employs 48 272 people. Burger Planet is the leader of the quick service restaurant industry and, although retired, Muellenbach I is the current president of the Quick Service Restaurant Association.

United Breaks Guitars
Dave Carroll’s reaction to United Airline’s complete disregard of doing the right thing was a . fiasco the airline company could have avoided entirely. Since this is my blog I will disregard conciseness at times, but I will stick to AP style in all other aspects. After all, I own this blog and if I want to add an extra word here and there, I’m going to do it. Okay, enough babbling. A simple $1,200 fix turned into a reported $180 million dollar loss for United within four days of the video’s release. According to the report by Chris Ayres of the Times Online, that number “would have bought Carroll more than 51,000 replacement guitars.” Carroll gave them nine months to fix their mistake and he did warn them about what he would do, but the big bad airline wasn’t going to be bullied by some small time folk singer from Canada. I guess the joke was on them.
Like I said Carroll told the airline he would write three songs and music videos about the airline breaking his guitar and how the situation was handled. What was a lapse in judgment by United turned out to be a brilliant move for Carroll. His catchy tunes and slap stick music video quickly attracted attention to the tune of 461 comments and more than 24,000 views on Youtube within 23 hours of its release. As of the moment I am writing this, the original video has posted by Carroll and his band Sons of Maxwell has been viewed an astounding 9,144,470 times! In a brilliant move, Carroll has turned his misfortune into immediate national exposure. Although his music career hasn’t exactly soared to mega-stardom, he has turned his fame into a nice public speaking gig. Carroll gets numerous invites and even has an invite to speak at the one and only, Utah State University. Whether he shows up depends on an unnamed to PR professor. I applaud Mr. Carroll for his persistence and creativeness. Score one for the little guy.
Like I said earlier, United could have avoided this whole thing if they would have used just a tiny bit of common sense. I know big corporations like United have policies that protect them from situations like this, but after nine months of pestering, you would think united would realize Carroll wasn’t going to stop until justice was served. After Carroll posted the first of his United trilogy on Youtube, United then offered Carroll the $1,200 to fix his guitar. They lauded him for his video and seemed to try and laugh the whole thing off. Why not try and spin the whole ordeal in a positive light and hire Carroll to do some commercials for them or host some of his concerts. After the first nine months of non-action by United, I am not surprised the light bulb never went on. Seems to me, United needs to change a few of those light bulbs, if you know what I mean. Carroll’s songs attracted millions of views you would think United would take notice and use his talents for them. United’s lack of judgment baffles me every time I think of this gaffe and I am surely not going to be flying the friendly skies on a United plane. After all, if United breaks guitars, what else do they break?

Letter to Cousin
Dear Cousin Egg,
Well Egg, I am now in Utah. I've been here over three years now. Oh how time flies! I am attending Utah State University and I would love to show you around campus if you ever come down. I've discovered this thing called public relations and it's pretty cool. I'm sure you've heard of it. You probably think public relations is all about covering up problems for rich people or lying to the public to so those rich people look good. The fact of the matter is that couldn't be farther than the truth. One of the most important attributes of a good public relations person is being ethical. The media is sometimes referred to as a "gatekeeper" for the public, well I think a public relations representative can be the same. Executives and presidents of organizations are not trained in public relations and can make bad choices, but if you have a good PR rep to step in stop the bad choices a crisis could be averted. Being ethical is just one of the many positive attributes of a good PR agaent.
Public relations could be defined as the analysis of situations, and implementing and carrying out plans that will benefit an organization and it's stakeholders. There are so many aspects of PR that to go into the profession one would really need to be a jack of all trades. Some of the other important skills of the profession are working well with other people, being confident, being a quick learner, being articulate, being a good researcher, being a good listener and being a good writer.
I've been told being a good writer is key to being a good PR person because of the need to convey messages through press releases and speeches. I'm hoping my journalism training will help me in this aspect.
Understanding situations and relating to the your different publics are also traits that one must have to be a a good PR person. Depending on where an agent works, there are endless amounts of people to relate to, be it poor people to rich investors. Getting to know these peoples' situations and showing that the organization is truely invested in the stakeholders is key.
I said publics earlier. Publics is term that refers to all the audiences or stakeholders that I talked about earlier. I wanted to clarify in case you were confused by that word.
If I go into the PR field I hope I can catch on with a professional sports team or a good firm and become a publicist in Hollywood. I think PR could help me create connections that will benefit my writing career in the future too. I'm excited by my new found career opportunity and hope you understand more about the profession.
Nick
